Music

Intent

At Kew Riverside, we aim to inspire a love of music and creativity in all pupils. Our intent is to provide a broad, balanced, and progressive music curriculum that enables children to develop their musical skills, knowledge, and understanding. We want pupils to gain confidence in performing, composing, listening, and appraising music, while also developing an appreciation of a wide range of musical styles and traditions. Our curriculum is inclusive and designed to ensure that every child can participate, achieve, and enjoy music.

Implementation

Music is taught using the structured Charanga scheme of work, organised on a Cycle A and Cycle B rotation to ensure clear progression across year groups. Lessons are carefully sequenced and build on prior learning, covering key musical elements such as pulse, rhythm, pitch, dynamics, and notation. Through a combination of singing, playing instruments, listening, and composing, pupils develop both practical skills and theoretical understanding. The scheme provides high-quality resources, including interactive materials and diverse musical examples, which support consistent teaching while allowing flexibility to meet the needs of all learners. Opportunities are regularly provided for rehearsal and performance, helping pupils to embed their learning and build confidence.

Impact

As a result of our approach, pupils develop a strong foundation in musical skills and an increasing confidence in performing and expressing themselves musically. They are able to listen with concentration, recognise and describe different musical elements, and create their own compositions. Pupils also develop an appreciation for a wide range of music from different cultures and historical periods. Progress is monitored through ongoing assessment, ensuring that all children make good progress and are well-prepared for further musical learning. Ultimately, our pupils leave primary school with a lasting enjoyment of music and the confidence to continue their musical journey.
