French

Intent
At Kew Riverside, we aim to foster a love of languages and an appreciation of different cultures through the teaching of French. Using the Language Angels scheme of work, our intent is to provide a high-quality, engaging, and progressive curriculum that builds confidence and competence in speaking, listening, reading, and writing. We want pupils to develop curiosity about the wider world, respect for cultural diversity, and the skills needed to communicate in another language. Our curriculum is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all learners, ensuring that every child experiences success and enjoyment in language learning.

Implementation
French is taught using the structured and progressive Language Angels scheme, on a Cycle A and Cycle B rotation, which ensures clear progression across year groups. Lessons are carefully sequenced to develop key skills and knowledge over time, covering vocabulary, grammar, and pronunciation in a systematic way. Teachers use a variety of interactive and engaging strategies, including songs, games, stories, and speaking activities, to support learning and retention. The scheme provides resources that enable consistent delivery while allowing teachers to adapt lessons to meet the needs of their pupils. Opportunities are built in for revisiting and consolidating prior learning, ensuring that knowledge is embedded in long-term memory.

Impact
As a result of our approach, pupils develop increasing confidence in communicating in French and a secure understanding of key language skills. They are able to listen attentively, respond to spoken language, read and understand simple texts, and write basic sentences independently. Pupils also gain an awareness of French culture and develop positive attitudes towards language learning. Progress is monitored through ongoing assessment, ensuring that children achieve well and are prepared for further language study at Key Stage 3. Ultimately, our pupils leave primary school with a strong foundation in French and an enthusiasm for learning languages.
