Kew Riverside Primary School

Children at the heart of everything we do

Physical Education (PE)

At Kew Riverside we believe that physical activity is essential for children’s health and well-being and we encourage every single child to enjoy and fully participate in PE and sport. Our aims are to fulfil the requirements of the National Curriculum for PE as a minimum, providing a broad, balanced and differentiated curriculum that ensures the progressive development of PE skills and knowledge. Through high quality PE and sports teaching, both in the curriculum and as part of extracurricular provision, we seek to ensure that all children show resilience and embed values such as fairness and respect; are able to evaluate, reflect and demonstrate decision making; and can apply and adapt skills in order to achieve their personal best. Children learn the importance of teamwork, fair play and good sportsmanship as well as the benefits of a healthy, physical lifestyle.  We want children to gain these skills and knowledge not simply through PE lessons, but through involvement in local tournaments in which they can represent the school, theme days/weeks, after-school clubs and in-school ‘House’ competitions.

PE is taught twice-weekly in the school playground, our extensive school field or the hall, depending on the area of focus. One session per week is taught by an external PE specialist.

In Years 3 to 5, each class has a term of weekly swimming lessons at Pools on the Park, Richmond, where they are taught by professional swimming coaches.

PE lessons are structured around four key areas of focus: Athletics, Games, Gymnastics and Dance.
