Physical Education (PE)

‘Physical education, physical activity and sport have been shown to impact positively on the extent to which young people feel connected to their school; the aspirations of young people; the extent to which positive social behaviours exist within school; and the development of leadership and citizenship skills.’

(Youth Sports Trust)

Intent

At Kew Riverside Primary School, we believe that physical activity not only improves health, reduces stress and improves concentration, but also has a positive influence on academic achievement, emotional stability and interaction with others.

We recognise the huge benefits that PE and sport offers and are dedicated to promoting healthy and active lifestyles – we also want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team and understand fairness and equity. Our broad and varied curriculum has been developed to ensure all pupils from KS1 and KS2 receive two hours of quality PE teaching a week: one from our class teachers and one from our specialist coaching team, BeActive. Pupils in the early years are provided with further opportunities to develop their physical and social skills through a wide range of activities and games. Alongside our engaging curriculum and wide variety of clubs provided by specialist coaches and competitions, we strive to develop a love of sport and exercise in all of our pupils that promotes a life-long love of physical activity and sport.

Physical activity is embedded throughout daily school life at Kew Riverside; not only as part of structured PE lessons, but during playtimes – where we have dedicated sports leaders and zones – and through our after-school provisions. We understand that if we can inspire and build positive attitudes and behaviours in PE from an early age, we can provide our children with the tools and skills to take ownership of their health and wellbeing as they move on to secondary school and their adult lives. With a large football field, basketball and netball court, table tennis tables and a variety of interschool and borough-wide competitions, we truly do believe the sky is the limit for children at Kew Riverside!

Implementation

In line with the National Curriculum, at Kew Riverside, our PE curriculum aims to ensure that all pupils have opportunities to:

  • Develop the competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities
  • Be physically active for sustained periods of time
  • Engage in competitive sports and activities
  • Lead healthy, active lives.

In Key Stage 1, pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.

Pupils will be taught to:
  • Master basic movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
  • Participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
  • Perform dances using simple movement patterns.

In Key Stage 2, pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.

Pupils should be taught to:
  • Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
  • Play competitive games, modified where appropriate (for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis), and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
  • Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance (for example, through athletics and gymnastics)
  • Perform dances using a range of movement patterns
  • Take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
  • Compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best.

Enrichment opportunities

  • We offer a range of quality after-school clubs from our specialised coaches ranging from football, dodgeball, tennis, athletics and karate
  • Students in Year 5 and 6 take part in outdoor adventure activities through school trips (Juniper Hall and PGL)
  • We participate in borough-wide tournaments and leagues in netball, football, tag-rugby, dodgeball and swimming
  • We host inter and intra school matches in football, tag rugby, cricket, dodgeball and hockey
  • Regular use of our extensive school field – sports day, outdoor learning days, after-school clubs
  • Every class completes the ‘Daily Mile’ each day with the aim of increasing movement and activity throughout the day

Impact

We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging, challenging and fun. From our teaching, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health wellbeing with many participating and enjoying the success of competitive sports. We provide our children with the skills and love for sport and physical activity. We monitor the impact of our PE curriculum and teaching by:

  • Monitoring of children's understanding, knowledge and skills by the class teacher throughout lessons. This assessment is then used to inform differentiation, interventions and support required by the children
  • Summative half-term assessments
  • Regular revisiting of prior learning through short verbal tests, quizzes and games.
  • Interviewing the pupils about their learning (pupil voice)
