What is Head’s Award?
From 2016-17, all children in Years 4, 5 and 6 will participate in a scheme known as Head’s Award. This is an exciting and challenging scheme where the children can develop their organisation, knowledge and skills in order to begin to prepare themselves for life beyond Kew Riverside. All children will work towards achieving a bronze, silver or gold award by meeting a set of objectives.
The objectives for the award contains four categories:
- high standards
- social responsibility
- emotional intelligence and,
Each of these categories has a list of activities which the children should work towards achieving and is broken down in to bronze, silver and gold (This information can be found on the website). Each child begins with bronze and once this is achieved, they move on to the silver and finally gold categories. In some cases, where a child has achieved the gold award, there may be an option to work towards a platinum award.
Portfolio of evidence
All children will be provided with a folder and are expected to prepare a portfolio of evidence to exemplify how they are working towards the categories listed above. Regular sessions are timetabled in to the school week, but it is expected that some amount of time, outside of school, will be required.
In order to achieve the awards, the emphasis is placed on the children working independently, producing portfolios with a high standard of presentation and including a range of evidence from formal certificates to photographs, handwritten documents to photocopies of class work. Occasionally, your support may be required to help with the preparation and presentation of portfolios.
Submitting portfolios for assessment
Portfolios are handed in for assessment by the Head teacher twice a year, once in the spring term and once in the summer term.
The Head teacher and the class teacher will make the decision together. If, for some reason, a child has not achieved an award, the Head teacher will offer feedback as to how the child could improve their work. The portfolio can then be resubmitted in the next term.
Celebrating achieving the award
To celebrate achieving each award, the children will be invited to a special Head’s Award ceremony in the school hall. Each child will have the opportunity to attend up to four award ceremonies across the three years in Years 4, 5 and 6.
A medal and pin will be awarded for the successful completion of each level and the children will also partake in some public speaking to highlight some new skills they have acquired.
Taking part in this scheme provides children with an enjoyable and exciting opportunity to develop and existing and new skills.
