Art & Design
Art encompasses the skills of creativity, experimentation and invention and is an integral part of Kew Riverside’s curriculum. We want children to develop the skills and passion for creating their own art – drawing, painting and sculpture - while at the same time appreciating and evaluating the works of great artists through the ages and from diverse cultures and countries throughout the world. In Reception, art is interwoven through the continuous provision model of teaching and learning. From Year 1 onwards, children receive sessions of drawing, painting or sculpture in 3-4 week blocks twice a year to enable an immersive experience. Sessions build on children’s skills and knowledge from year to year and, as much as possible, meaningful cross-curricular links are made between art and other subjects. A key artist is focused on in each unit of art so that as well as expanding their technical and creative skills, children are developing their knowledge of art history and the key figures and cultural movements within it.
